For parents, the Central Rappahannock Regional Library is especially helpful. This is coming from a mother of three boys ages six and under. Three very loud, energetic, imaginative boys. If you are fearful that you’ll be shamed and hushed for bringing your children to the library, please put that notion aside. The staff at all local branches are accommodating, friendly and eager to help. Here are just a few reasons (besides the free wi-fi) why you need some library time as a parent.

● Reading is fundamental to your child’s development. There are dozens upon dozens of scientific studies on the importance of reading to your children early and often. For more information and helpful tips, read, “10 Simple Ways to Raise Kids Who Love to Read” here on our website.

● The Central Rappahannock Regional Library offers free storytimes for kids in different age groups. These storytimes usually include songs, multiple stories and the occasional craft. Pro tip: If one storytime doesn't fit, try another. They books and styles vary between groups.

● There are children’s areas with toys, coloring or STEM stations, and of course children’s books. The Salem Church Branch children’s section even has a separate room with educational and sensory toys. This area is perfect for nursing moms with toddlers who may wander (not that I would know *ahem*) and young kids.

● You can place a hold on a book and pick it up on the way out. Browsing for a book at home is much more fun than trying to corral wiggly kids in the Home and Garden section. Trust us on this one.

● Use their app. Download it immediately. You can use it to check your account, place a hold on a book, download an ebook and check the event calendar.

● New! This year, the library has released “Launchpads,” or tablets, loaded full of educational ad-free apps, books and games for kids ages ages 3-5 and 5-7, to use during checkout. Per its website, “The apps enhance skills in math, science, language learning, English language arts, critical thinking, and creativity. Launchpads are 100 percent safe and secure. They do not connect to wi-fi or request personal information. There is even a screen for an adult to check up on what a child has been playing and see which skills have been tested. Kids can score Discovery Points in each activity. With their points, they can ‘purchase’ accessories for their own avatars.”

● There are movies available to rent as well. Just be sure to return them on time! The duration to borrow is shorter than a book.

● Free classes! Ever wanted to learn how to crochet, code or compost? Need your résumé tweaked or practical financial advice? The library offers several classes per month geared toward adults and teens.

● Free meetups! The library is home to various clubs that range from knitting enthusiasts, to craft brewery meetups to discuss literature. Interested in starting a group meetup or club? Just ask.
