In between camps, trips to grandma's house, and lazy days at the pool, here are a bunch of fun ideas to keep you busy this summer!

Outdoor Fun

Summer Fun @ Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Richmond: All programs are included with cost of regular garden admission. www.lewisginter.org 

  • Butterflies Live. Daily now through Oct 14. Experience the wonderful world of butterflies! Tropical beauties — fascinating and showy — transform the Conservatory’s North Wing into a wonderland of vibrant colors, captivating sights and extraordinary discoveries. The exhibit is ever-changing, so every time you visit, you’re likely to see something new.
  • Family Walk & Talk. Tuesdays, in June & Aug. 10 am. Enhance your understanding of the Garden with one of these specialized walks featuring seasonal aspects of the Garden. Includes hands on fun and a take home craft.
  • Good Green Fun. Thursdays, in June & August. 5 - 6 pm. Families with kids of all ages are invited to spend time in the Children’s Garden having “good green fun. 
  • Storytime in the Garden. Fridays, in June & August. 10 - 11 am. Enjoy storybooks and activities in the Children’s Garden. Included in garden admission.
  • Water Play Weekends. All summer long (weather permitting!). The Children’s Garden is the coolest place to be! Bring or wear your bathing suit and water shoes to enjoy the gentle water sprays. Don’t forget a towel!
  • Nature Connects: Art with Lego Bricks. Daily, June 28 – Sep 22, 9 am – 5 pm. Created with half-a-million LEGO bricks, the exhibit will feature 24 sculptures in 13 displays throughout the Garden. Many of the sculptures are larger than life and highlight the inter-connectivity of all living things. There’s even a chance for guests to be part of the exhibit with a photo opportunity built into a mosaic of a garden scene. www.lewisginter.org/nature-connects-lego/ 

Picnic in the Park: Every Tuesday in June. 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. Featuring live music and children’s activities. Bring a picnic lunch or buy one in the park. Enjoy the sunshine with your children, friends and co-workers! Free and open to the public! Where: Hurkamp Park, downtown F'burg

Flying Circus Air Show: Every Sunday in the summer (weather permitting), 2 - 4 pm. Parachute jumpers, barnstormers, wing walkers and much more comedic fun at this weekly airshow. Airplane rides too! Movie Under the Stars: Every other Saturday June – Sept. 8 pm. Bring your own blankets/chairs and join us for FREE movie on the Jumbotron by the fountain! Where: Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge. For movie schedule: www.stonebridgeptc.com/events 

Free Trolley Rides! Fri & Sat May 31 – Aug 31, 5 – 9 pm. A free, family-friendly “Around the Town” service that offers participants a snapshot of the wonders of downtown Fredericksburg is returning this summer. The City of Fredericksburg is bringing back our free shuttle service for locals and tourists alike. The City will contract with Trolley Tours of Fredericksburg on the service, which will include a roughly 15-minute loop of downtown and stop at four carefully selected locations. The Trolley Tours guides will have handy information for riders upon request about the downtown and its rich history and many amenities. Go HERE for pick up/drop off locations.

Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair: July 26 – Aug 4. Head to the oldest fair in the United States! Celebrate with traditional fair events, contests, rides, entertainment and more! www.fredericksburgfair.org 

Sipping Under the Stars. Select Saturday nights throughout the summer. 7 -10 pm. Make your way into the vineyard to sip wine under the stars and enjoy our featured film of the evening. Bring your picnic blanket or lawn chair for your viewing pleasure. Come early to begin your evening with a delectable dinner from Le Grand Cru Bistro in one of our Tuscan Venues. James Madison's Montpelier: Kids Are Free This Summer! July 8 - Aug 30. All kids ages 14 and under visiting with a paying adult get free admission to the House. The free tours make for an affordable and enriching summer experience available to visitors every day of the week. Montpelier will also be offering its "Discovering Montpelier: A Family Friendly Tour," an interactive experience for families that involves using artifacts and documents, participating in kid-friendly activities, and touring the House and its surroundings. www.montpelier.org

Dinosaur Live Show: Tues – Sun, June 1 – Aug 31, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm or 4:30 pm. Dinosaur Zoo Live leads you on a breathtaking tour that begins in prehistoric Australia. Meet and interact with an eye-popping collection of larger-than-life dinosaurs presented in an entertaining and educational live theatrical performance. Where: National Zoo Theater, DC. Reading Fun

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program: Read any 8 books, record them in the journal (find info HERE) and turn in to our store between Aug 1 – 31 and then choose a FREE BOOK from our selection on the Reading Journal list at the store... Enjoy reading!

Books-a-Million Summer Reading: Read any 4 books from the Summer Adventure Ready Section, write about the books you've read in your summer reading adventure notebook, and return to your local store to receive a FREE Diary of a Wimpy Kid drawstring backpack. Go HERE for more info.

Concerts
