Hot off the Press

FREDERICKSBURG, VA (May 1, 2016) Twenty-seven generous local businesses and individuals have created a $100,000 incentive prize pool to help nonprofits raise the most money ever in a single day in our region. The Community Give, a powerful, 24-hour online day of giving, will be held around the clock Tuesday, May 3.

This year, 182 nonprofits are participating in the event, sponsored by The Community Foundation. Together, they are working to rally 10,000 donations to raise at least $1 million.

Sponsors of the incentive prizes include: The Honeywell Charitable Fund; The Community Enrichment Fund; Kaeser Compressors, Inc.; Union Bank and Trust; Anonymous 1; SimVentions; The Repp Family; Access Eye; Stafford Printing; Wack General Contractor; Walton Development; Goodloe Asphalt, LC; Hagerman Group; Mary Jane O'Neill; Cooper Financial - Raymond James; Germanna Community College; Mary Katherine Greenlaw; Hirschler Fleischer; Jarrell, Hicks and Waldman; Kelly and Fitz Johnson; Jason Kunkler; Marstel-Day Community Conservation Enhancement Fund; Monkee's of Fredericksburg; Rappahannock Orthodontics; Synergy Periodontics and Implants - Lillie Pitman DMD and Thanos Ntounis DDS, MS; Van Zandt Restorations; Joe and Mary Wilson/PermaTreat Inc.; Anonymous 2; CRC Public Relations; WFLS, NewsTalk1350; 99.3 The Vibe and 96.9 The Rock.

Participating nonprofits can earn cash prizes in addition to the donations given online by individual donors. Examples of the incentive prizes include: A $10,000 grand prizes to the nonprofit that raises the most money and another $10,000 grand prize for the nonprofit with the most unique donors. Each hour for 24 hours, two nonprofits with donors that hour will be awarded $500 at random.

“The bonus contests throughout the day drive the excitement! Random drawings and cash prizes mean that participating nonprofits can raise even more money to support their missions,” said foundation Executive Director Teri McNally. Complete prize rules can be found at

Participants are receiving free training and tools offered by The Community Foundation in partnership with Germanna’s Center for Workforce Development and the Virginia Center for Nonprofit Excellence.

The Community Foundation does not charge donors or nonprofits to participate. The company processing the online donations charges an industry standard transaction fee to the charities.

The Community Foundation ensures that all donors will receive an immediate thank you and a receipt for 100 percent of their donation.

This year donors can choose among three easy ways to give between midnight and 11:59 p.m. on May 3rd. Go online to

Or deliver check(s) between 10 am and 8 p.m. at The Community Foundation, Mill Race North II Building, 725 Jackson St. in Fredericksburg. Or stop by ANY Union Bank office in the region to drop off check(s) or make donation(s) online.

Pouches' Community Corner

Pouches Visits the Past

If Pouches' experience at History Camp is any indication, your son or daughter will enjoy joining Washington Heritage Museums and the George Washington Foundation for History Camp in Fredericksburg. The week-long day camp will be held June 25-29, from 9:00 a.m. to noon each day.

Young historians discover American history with hands-on experiences as they walk in the footsteps where the history of Fredericksburg, and a budding America, was created. The camp complements the history taught in classrooms with activities such as soap making, code breaking, colonial crafts, penmanship and much more.
