Fredericksburg Resident Named Strayer University Valedictorian

Craig Brown to Address More Than 1,600 Fellow Graduates

WASHINGTON – June 20, 2012 – Strayer University is pleased to announce that Craig Brown, a resident of Fredericksburg, Va., has been named valedictorian. Brown will receive his award on Saturday, June 23 at Strayer University's Washington, D.C. regional commencement ceremony held at the Verizon Center.

A former Marine from Conrad, Mont., Brown realized his personal and work experience would advance his corporate career only so far. Brown enrolled in online and campus-based classes at Strayer University to further develop his management skills and pave the way for promotional opportunities. Ultimately, Brown's business administration degree from Strayer University contributed to his promotion as design manager within the Technical Services Group at ManTech International Corporation. Brown, whose son attends Strayer University, is confident that he will continue to progress in his career as a result of his Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

"I believe that a strong work ethic will advance people far in their careers," Brown said. "The difference is that after earning my degree at Strayer University, I now understand the value of the well-rounded education one receives in pursuit of a degree."

Strayer University's valedictorian title is granted to a student with a 4.0 grade point average, high levels of engagement in the community, and extracurricular activities. Brown serves on the board of Spotsylvania Crime Solvers Inc., which raises money to fund awards for those providing tips to help authorities solve crimes.

Brown will deliver his valedictorian speech in front of more than 1,600 students at the D.C. regional ceremony, where Harry E. Johnson Sr., J.D., president and CEO of the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation Inc. will deliver the commencement address. With a 120-year legacy of educating adult learners, Strayer University offers relevant and rigorous academic programs to working adults, first-generation college students and others who often do not have access to higher education, preparing them for success in today's competitive job market.

Strayer University graduates earn degrees in programs ranging from business administration and accounting to education and information systems. The Strayer University D.C. regional commencement ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23 at the Verizon Center, located at 601 F Street NW, Washington, D.C.

Pouches' Community Corner

Pouches Visits the Past

If Pouches' experience at History Camp is any indication, your son or daughter will enjoy joining Washington Heritage Museums and the George Washington Foundation for History Camp in Fredericksburg. The week-long day camp will be held June 25-29, from 9:00 a.m. to noon each day.

Young historians discover American history with hands-on experiences as they walk in the footsteps where the history of Fredericksburg, and a budding America, was created. The camp complements the history taught in classrooms with activities such as soap making, code breaking, colonial crafts, penmanship and much more.
