2012 Relay For Life of Fredericksburg May 19th

relay-for-lifeRelay For Life is the American Cancer Society's largest event and the world's biggest fundraiser with more than 3 million participants. During this overnight community event, teams walk around a track, relay-style, to raise funds, celebrate survivorship, and remember those lost to cancer.

The Relay in Fredericksburg began in 1995 and was called the Greater Fredericksburg Relay. Since then many laps have been walked to remember loved ones and friends who lost their battle with cancer and many laps have been walked in celebration and hope for Survivors.

Relay For Life has become a very important part of the Fredericksburg community and has for many years brought teams of people together to Celebrate, Remember and to Fight back by raising awareness and funds to find a cure. Last year 85 teams joined together for Relay and raised over $235,569 for cancer research and programs to help cancer patients stay well.

This is our 17th Relay For Life of Fredericksburg event and we are striving to match and beat last year's goal through the many local team fundraising events from spaghetti dinners to bowling night and Tug of War to Cupcake Wars you can find all the fundraisers around town on the website.

The 2012 Relay event will be in the heart of Fredericksburg at James Monroe High School May 19 & 20, 2012 from 4:00pm - 5:00am. There will be lots of fun things for the whole family to participate in throughout the night with local venders, entertainment and special laps and events like the Survivor Lap at 5:30pm, Survivor & Caregiver dinner at 6:00pm and Luminaria Ceremony at 9:00pm. The Opening Ceremony will begin at 5:00pm after our 1st Annual Kids Walk.

Kids Walk is a fun-filled celebration that takes place during our Relay For Life and is just for young people, ages 12 and under. Youth are invited to walk around the track and enjoy a number of activities and games which are not only fun but are also designed to help them learn about cancer prevention. Kids Walk activities include: face painting, tattoos, clown, princesses, corn hole, engineering for kids, making rockets and launching them off, local mascots, and storytelling show. This is a great way to get kids involved and learn the importance of participating in community activities. The entire family is welcome and encouraged to participate in the Relay For Life. Each child is asked to try to raise $25 – or whatever they can – to help find a cure for cancer. A prize will be awarded to the child who is the top fundraiser! All participating kids must check in at the main stage by 3:30pm. The Kids Walk will begin at 4:00pm and will last until 5:00pm. Registration is only $10 per child.
