On Your Mark!

GreatTrainRaceKsmilingIt’s time for the Great Train Race.

When Joe and Laura were little, I remember my neighbors telling me about the event. Their grandkids were participating and they tried to describe the magnitude (and fun) of the event. I nodded and smiled politely, but absolutely did not get it. Hordes of kids running through the streets? — “No, thank you.”

GreatTrainRaceAndTheyreOffThen Laura decided to participate. She was a savvy kindergartener and since her friends were going to run, she wanted to run, too. I stayed home with Joe, who was still an unruly toddler at the time. So my husband, Clay, took Laura. “Good for him,” I thought, “He can deal with the craziness.”

The next year, I reluctantly tagged along and to my surprise, I actually enjoyed it. It was mayhem, yes, but very controlled mayhem. And the kids! I loved seeing their little feet dancing at the start line and watching them dash down the final stretch. I’m not a sentimental person, usually, but this truly was a Hallmark moment.

When my little runner crossed the finish line, I was a total convert. I had my camera in hand and my brain ticked frantically thinking, “How many more years before Joe can do the Caboose Run?” We’ve never missed it since, and hope you and your kids will join us at The Great Train Race this year!
