Special Needs

1,000 "Fan-atics" Needed at Special Olympics Virginia Basketball Championships

If you've ever played sports, you know what it's like to be cheered on by a crowd. The applause, the shouts of encouragement, the adrenaline rush. Now imagine that same swim meet, that same soccer tournament, that same football game - but without the fans.

We believe it's truly not as special without the fans - and that goes for any sports competition, including Special Olympics. So we need you to "Volunteer to Cheer" at this year's Special Olympics Virginia Basketball Championships, set for March 19-20 at various venues in Stafford. Spend two hours - or all day! - showing your enthusiasm for more than 800 athletes from across Virginia who will go for the gold on the courts.

We need you to fill the stands and cheer, because competing without cheering fans is truly not as special. We promise you will see that our athletes are deserving of your applause and support. Sign up today at

Check-in will be at the "Volunteer to Cheer" tables located at each competition venue. Here, you will be able to make posters and signs and hopefully meet some athletes face to face. Feel free to dress up in your most fanatic costume or paint your face to show your spirit. Everyone who comes out to cheer also will get free "cheer sticks" to help them get into the spirit!
