Special Needs

By Marty van Duyne

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will celebrate its 20th anniversary in July 2010. The law was enacted to eliminate discrimination against individuals with disabilities. It also set clear standards to address discrimination and ensure that the federal government could enforce those standards.

Many local, state, regional, and national events are being planned in 2010 in recognition of the ADA. Fredericksburg Parent and Family is proud to dedicate this issue on Special Needs to the ADA 20th anniversary celebration.

The National ADA Symposium, hosted by the Network of ADA Centers, will host its 14th annual Conference on the ADA June 20 through 23 in Denver. Information on the conference can be found at www.adasymposium.org.

The full text of the ADA of 1990 including the 2008 amendments can be found on the Department of Justice web site at www.ada.gov.
