Late in my eighth month of pregnancy, which just happened to be in August, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, I decided that a short stroll down to the farmer’s market at Hurkamp Park would be a nice way to spend the afternoon. As I waddled past my neighbor Mrs. Walker’s house, she came out on the porch and said “What are you doing? It is too hot for you to be outside!”

I laughed merrily and reassured her that I was only going three blocks and would be just fine. Half an hour later I was half way home, close to heat exhaustion and very, very worried I was going to go into labor on the open street. Just as I started to black out, a car pulled up beside me, the window rolled down, and Mrs. Walker leaned out…

”GET IN THIS CAR” she said.

All time favorite memory.

On August 17, three weeks after a routine pediatrician appointment for their then 4-month-old son, Levi, Liz and Angel Colon received news that no parent ever wants to hear: Levi’s liver wasn’t processing bile correctly, and he will very likely need a liver transplant—and time is of the essence.
