Hot off the Press

This is truly a one of a kind event! On June 7, 2014 at Curtis Memorial Park in Fredericksburg, we will hold a charity event consisting of a triathlon, a golf tournament, and a health and wellness fair to honor my friend, Karla Hendrix, who has had MS for 30 years. All proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project, MS Society and SERVE.

The Sprint Triathlon Starts at 7:45 am and the award ceremony take place at about noon. The triathlon, 300 meter swim, 10 mile bike ride, and three mile trail run is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (a first ever in Stafford County) and it is on their National Calendar of Events. Participants can choose to go "traditional", or "non-traditional" (using a kick board). We will also have a wave of Wounded Warriors as well as MS athletes, as well as a separate wave for relay teams (3 People) in which each person takes one of the events. Youth ages 12 -14 yrs can compete but must participate along with a parent who is participating in the event. Youth 15-18 yrs do not require a parent to participate but must have parental approval. The cost is $ 80.00 for triathletes, $130.00 for relay team.

We will also be holding a Golf Tournament at the Gauntlet Golf Club. Sign in for the tournament starts at 12:00 pm and play starts at 1:00 pm. Dixon Golf will be on hand and will be giving away thousands of dollars of gifts. The cost is $75.00 per golfer.

Our Health and Wellness fair starts at 9:00 am and goes to 4:00 pm. Lots of people will be on hand to help answer questions about health and wellness for you and your family. The Health and Wellness Fair will include music, a healthy BBQ from Capital Meats, gourmet fresh fruit cups with a variety of toppings, healthy drinks, free bouncy houses, and face painting along with games for kids.

We invite girls k-5th grades to come in their favorite princess costume and cheer on our Wounded Warrior as well as MS tri-athletes as they cross the finish line. Please bring flower petals so you can gently toss them while cheering on these incredible hero's.

Following the sprint triathlon, please feel free to hike the trails or check out entertainment at the amphitheater. More activities are in the works.

The Central Virginia Television (CVTV) station will film the entire event and broadcast it in the Fredericksburg region over the summer. It will also be available on their website.

Please check us out at to sign up for sporting events, to help volunteer, get a table at the Health and Wellness Fair (must have a health or wellness theme) or sponsor or donate money. You can also look us up on Facebook under "The Karla Hendrix For Love of Life Sprint Triathlon/Gold Tournament."

Adoptive parents in Fredericksburg now have a new partner on their journey to a healthy family. In 2016, Children’s Home Society was awarded a $125,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Social Services to extend their Richmond area post-adoptive services to the Fredericksburg area.

Now CHS is looking to find adoptive families in the area who need support before they hit a crisis point. “It doesn’t matter which agency they adopted from, or when that happened,” said Buckheit. “We want to offer a lifetime of support to adoptive families in the Fredericksburg area, especially those who haven’t been aware of our services in the past.”
