A Patient Navigator began working out of Mary Washington Hospital Oct. 1 to guide the region's residents through options provided by the Affordable Care Act.

The full-time navigator, working for Advanced Patient Advocacy — the firm hired by the federal government to assist residents navigating the Affordable Care Act — is located in the Patient Access office adjacent to the hospital's atrium Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The navigator is prepared to help people, especially the uninsured, understand options and how to enroll in qualified health plans. The navigator will also help those who speak any language complete the process. As of Oct. 1, Americans can sign up for health coverage on new exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act.

The program sends nurses to bereavement training, and provides or supplements the $55 memory boxes that include clothes, booties, handknot blankets, pictures, foot prints, hand prints, clipped hair and other mementos.
