Especially today, I would like to take a minute to say thank you to your children for their service to our military. But not only would I like to thank them...I would also like to thank you as parents.
I don't know about you, but I tried to raise my now-adult children with the intention that they would be self-reliant, dependable, hard-working and confident. If your child chooses to join the military, whether it is for one enlistment or a life-time, you have done your job. The military isn't something that you can touch or feel. It is a passion. A passion to serve your family, your country and to serve others.
I know that there are so many children, both young children and older children (who have their own children) who are spending time away from their family and friends. They are missing holidays, birthdays and special occasions that only come by once a year (or maybe once in a lifetime). And they are making sacrifices to serve their country...some, even making the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives. I would like to personally thank you and say a huge thank you from the Blue Star Mothers of Fredericksburg.
We would like to let you know that we are here to support you. As we approach the holiday season, we are well aware of the feelings that you are having and how, some days, it just seems as if it is too much to bear. That is why we will be, once again, sending your children care packages for the holidays.
We invite you to please contact the Blue Star Mothers of Fredericksburg and allow us to send your child a special holiday care package. I remember, when my husband was in Operation Desert Storm, he received special care packages from someone in Shreveport, Louisiana...which was his hometown. He didn't know the family, had never met them and had no idea how they found out about him. He hadn't "lived in" Louisiana for almost 20 years. They used to send him a card every few weeks, some small gifts and, even after he returned from the war, they sent him Christmas cards for years! It was so special to him.
Together with Girl Scout Troop 255, we have a ton of items to divide up so we can provide your children with care packages for the holidays. All you have to do is let us know. We will be putting the packages together on Saturday, November 16th at the Salem Church Library. So, if you have a child who is serving outside of the U.S. please contact me and provide me with their information. I'll be very happy to send them a special gift from home.
