For Deven Jani, success has never been about meeting expectations. It’s about following his passion and committing fully to what he loves. For this Riverbend High School senior, that mindset has guided him through a high school career defined by hard work, leadership and meaningful achievement.

Although he makes it look effortless, Jani’s accomplishments are the result of years of consistent dedication. This fall, the valedictorian is eager to apply his love for math in practical, real-life applications while attending the University of Virginia (UVA) with a double major in mathematics and finance through the McIntire School of Commerce.

Jani earned the Jefferson Scholarship, one of the nation’s most competitive full-ride awards, covering tuition, housing and enrichment opportunities at UVA. He was also named an Echols Scholar, placing him among the top students in UVA’s incoming class.

On a national level, Jani was recognized as both a National Merit Finalist and a National Merit Scholarship winner, an honor awarded to just 2,500 students out of more than one million test-takers nationwide. He was also formally recognized by Senator Mark Warner, receiving a letter of commendation for winning the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Virginia’s 7th District.

In addition, Jani was named a National Honor Society Scholarship semifinalist, a distinction that reflects excellence across the organization’s four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service and character. For Jani, this recognition held particular significance, as it represents not just academic performance, but a well-rounded commitment to making an impact in his school and community.

Beyond academics, Jani has made a lasting impact on his community. As vice president of the student council, he organized Red Cross blood drives and wrote 2,000 letters to veterans and seniors.

Service has been central to his journey, including participation in the Youth in Philanthropy program, where he and peers evaluated local nonprofits and helped allocate $10,000 in grant funding. He also gives back to the community as president of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Math Honor Society, by tutoring students in algebra, geometry and calculus.

Jani attributes his family’s support and influence to shaping his work ethic and perspective early on, helping him see academics not as a task, but as something enjoyable.

“My strongest influence on my success is my family,” Jani said. 

His mother, Mona Jani, remembered the early years.

“We would be driving in the car, and I would ask him multiplication facts,” Mona recalled, adding that “puzzles and board games were a huge part of his childhood.” Those early experiences helped build both “his curiosity and love of learning,” she said.

When he’s not studying or giving back to the community, Jani enjoys piano, chess and spending time with his family playing tennis or board games.

His academic journey is an example of dedication and the belief that when hard work is combined with passion, success naturally follows.

“Follow your passions, work hard and things will work out for you,” Jani added.
