Built to Last, Grounded in Service: How NK Floors Helps Families Create Beautiful, Durable Homes
Mar 10, 2026 10:26AM ● By Camille TurnerWhen families begin thinking about new flooring, they’re rarely just choosing colors and materials. They’re thinking about muddy footprints, spilled drinks, energetic pets, growing children, and the everyday moments that make up a home.
Finding flooring that balances beauty, durability, and budget can feel overwhelming, but for Nathan and Karie Owens, the owners of NK Floors, helping families navigate those choices is at the heart of what they do.
“We wanted to make an atmosphere where people felt safe and where they could depend on the core values of integrity, quality, respect, effective communication, superior work ethic, and flexibility. It goes beyond quality product or quality outcome – it's the whole process in which we engage with our customers and with our team,” said Karie.
The Owens bring decades of experience to their work. As a boy, Nathan helped his father with flooring installation, and he described flooring as being a part of who he is – it’s in his blood.
With installation teams serving across multiple states, the Owens opened their showroom in Fredericksburg two years ago, and then were inspired to open a local selection center last year. They wanted to move beyond performing quality installations to also selling quality products.
NK Floors is a family business, and several of the Owens’ nine children work in the company as well. Karie remarked, “It gives us all a common goal and purpose.” She went on to say that the entire team is also considered as family.
The Owens have served as missionaries overseas, noting that those experiences positively impacted the way they approach their business. It influenced how they strive to look at people’s individual needs and ensure that customers’ voices are heard.
Nathan said, “Each individual customer – their needs and their personality – is different. If you just cookie-cut everybody, you're not going to connect with them.”
Through NK Floors, the Owens continue to support the missionary work of others around the world, and they are also involved in community charities and services through their support of the Zoe Freedom Center, an organization dedicated to helping individuals overcome addiction, and Habitat for Humanity.
When it comes to flooring, the Owens believe in education first, ensuring that customers can make informed decisions that fully meet their needs. They take ample time to sit down with customers to discuss options and needs, educate about materials and products, and offer samples so that products can be tried in the home before committing.
Nathan shared a few tips for those searching for quality flooring and carpeting to keep in mind:
Flooring Tips for Busy Families
• Aim for both beauty and durability. Many families love the look of hardwood but need something more forgiving. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and high-quality, engineered hardwood offer a similar style with better resistance to scratches and spills.
• Consider luxury vinyl plank for everyday living. Today’s LVP comes in beautiful colors and realistic textures, is waterproof, and holds up well to heavy foot traffic – often at a more family-friendly price point.
• Think about comfort and noise. Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) vinyl flooring includes a cushioned core that adds softness underfoot and helps reduce noise, making it a great option for playrooms and family gathering spaces.
• Be cautious with traditional laminate. Laminate doesn’t handle moisture well and can swell if spills go unnoticed, making it less ideal for homes with young children or pets.
• Ask about hybrid flooring options. Mineral-core hybrid products like PureTech by Mohawk resist moisture while offering a tougher surface that stands up to daily wear.
• Pay attention to thickness in wood floors. For engineered or solid hardwood, look for flooring that’s at least a half inch thick. Thinner, builder-grade options may look nice at first but don’t tend to last.
• Check the wear layer on luxury vinyl. A 20-mil wear layer is a good benchmark for family homes. Thinner layers may be cheaper, but they’re more likely to show wear over time.
• Advertised deals often feature lower-quality materials. Always check the fine print and ask about durability before committing.
Carpet Tips for Homes with Kids and Pets
• Look for pet- and spill-friendly options. Pet Protect carpets have special backing that prevents spills from soaking through and makes cleanup easier.
• Consider solution-dyed carpet. These carpets have built-in stain and color resistance, helping them look fresh longer.
• Avoid low-density, 25-ounce carpet, which is often used in promotional deals but tends to wear out quickly.
• Start at 35 ounces or higher. A minimum of 35-ounce carpet offers better comfort and durability, and many families can even upgrade to 45-ounce carpet for a similar price.
• Compare quality, not just cost. When getting quotes, ask about carpet weight, backing, and warranties, not just square-foot pricing.
The Owens noted the rewarding nature of the work they do and that growth is at the forefront of their minds, not only in business but in giving back to the community. They also expressed a desire to support young people looking to go into a trade such as flooring. Karie said, “We would love to open up a training center, and I would love to see NK Floors spearheading that in our area, making that a viable option for people to choose a very good business route.”
For the Owens, this vision for the future is rooted in deep appreciation for the community they serve and the relationships they’ve built along the way.
Karie said, “We are honored to serve this community. We are excited to get to know more families and try to make a difference.”
